How to Return Spectrum Equipment When You Move

July 24, 2026

Moving already has a long to-do list. Returning your Spectrum equipment is one of those tasks that’s easy to forget until you get a bill for a modem you left in a box somewhere. Whether you’re transferring service to your new address or cancelling it altogether, here’s how to handle it cleanly.

First: Transfer or Cancel?

Before you do anything with the hardware, check whether Spectrum serves your new address.

If it does, you can transfer your service instead of cancelling. Call Spectrum at 1-855-757-7328 or log into your account online to request a service transfer. In most cases you’ll keep the same equipment, and your billing continues without a gap. You return nothing.

If Spectrum doesn’t cover your new location, you’ll need to cancel and return everything they provided.

What Has to Go Back

Spectrum leases most of its hardware. Anything they supplied is their property and needs to be returned. That typically includes:

  • Modem or modem/router combination unit
  • Wireless router (if Spectrum issued it)
  • Cable or set-top boxes
  • Spectrum TV streaming devices
  • Power cords — check your account or ask Spectrum directly, as requirements vary by device and account

Remotes are generally not required back, but log into your account or confirm with Spectrum what is tied to your account before assuming.

If you bought your own third-party modem or router, that’s yours to keep. Log into your Spectrum account and check the equipment section to see what’s tied to your account. That’s the list they’ll reconcile when you cancel.

Three Ways to Return the Equipment

Drop Off at a UPS Store

This is the most convenient option for most people. Spectrum has a standing partnership with UPS that lets you hand in equipment at any UPS Store location at no charge. You don’t need a box, tape, or a shipping label. The staff will pack it and send it back to Spectrum on your behalf.

Always ask for a receipt. It’s your proof that you returned the gear, and you’ll want it if there’s ever a dispute on your final bill.

Return It at a Spectrum Store

If there’s a Spectrum retail location near you, walk it in directly. A Spectrum employee will process the return on the spot and give you confirmation. This is the fastest way to get an immediate record of the return if you want that assurance before you leave town.

Schedule a Technician Pickup

Spectrum offers in-home equipment pickup for customers who are unable to visit a store or UPS location due to a disability or physical limitation. Call customer service to ask whether you qualify. For everyone else, the UPS Store route is faster and more reliable.

What Happens If You Don’t Return It

Spectrum charges unreturned equipment fees for anything not handed back after cancellation. Depending on the device, you could be billed for the full retail replacement cost. Those charges go on your account and can be sent to a collections agency if left unpaid.

Spectrum gives you a return window after your cancellation date, but don’t push it. Making the return before your move date keeps things clean.

A Few Things Worth Doing Before You Go

Get a confirmation number. Whether you drop off at UPS or a Spectrum store, walk away with a receipt or reference number. Hold onto it for at least six months after your service ends — Spectrum occasionally issues equipment charges even after a confirmed return, and the receipt is your only defence.

Check your final bill. Spectrum will issue a final statement after you cancel. Look it over for any equipment fees or billing errors. Disputes are easier to sort out quickly, so call right away if something looks off.

Return before moving day if you can. Doing this during moving week, when you’re coordinating trucks and boxes and keys, is harder than knocking it out a few days before. If you know you’re cancelling, add it to your pre-move errands.

Note that DVR recordings won’t carry over. If you used a Spectrum-issued DVR, your saved recordings stay with the box. There’s nothing to manually wipe, but it’s worth knowing you’ll lose that content when the box goes back.

Still Sorting Out Your Move?

Returning your Spectrum equipment takes an hour at most. The bigger lift is moving your actual household. Whether you want full-service movers, portable moving containers, or a moving truck rental, you can compare your options in one place without calling a dozen companies yourself.
